There are more complete books available, but this compact book by the editor of Jane's Fighting Ships, Raymond V B Blackman, is worth a look. Of course, since it was published in 1963 it is now out of date, however, for a history buff, it does present a very worthwhile snapshot of what was considered to be the "most modern" of the world's warships at the time it was published. And because Mr. Blackman deliberately included on the most "important" of the ships, you get a good feel for what the "state of the art" ships looked like at that point in history.
